Bad Carb Day : Sauce Or Glaze?

Now that I love cheese a lot more than I used to, I ordered the Simple Cheddar at my favorite cafe.

Since I am not particularly fond of Balsamic sauce, I put a remark on my order "No Balsamic sauce".

The latte was superb. It made my day.

Then my open sandwich was served.

Aiks! Balsamic sauce! If I wanted to, I could have sent this lot back but I did not because I am a nice customer.

They would have to start over and it would be such a waste. And not only that, I would have to wait some more for my meal.

So.

I ate the Simple Cheddar and would have enjoyed the cheese sandwich a lot more without the Balsamic drizzle.

After I was done, at the cashier counter I made a comment regarding my request not being fulfilled. One of their staff, a young man, piped up "Oh that is Balsamic glaze not sauce (as I wrote in my remarks)".

Again, I am a nice customer. When an item has Balsamic glaze, even if the customer indicated "sauce", don't you think that common sense would tell you that it meant the "glaze"? Or if you are unsure, approach the customer and clarify. Right?

But no. Some initiative (and common sense) would have been nice.

My add-on avocado made my meal better.

By the way, when I said "Bad Carb Day" I do not mean that it was bad because of the Balsamic glaze but bad because it was a carb meal eaten without any significant portion of protein.

My ideal carb meal (what I call a good carb day) is carb + protein, which is what my usual/ideal carb days look like.

Well, they are closed today 23 July 2025.

  1. That person should learn to be better at customer service. Just clarify with the customer whether balsamic glaze is ok or not doesn't take much time. Yes you are a very good customer to not make a fuss. Hip hip hurray for u! 👍
Perhaps you may want to add eggs to your carb day to make it a good carb day instead of a bad one?

  2. Great quote, dear friend, and so true! Your meal looks delicious! Nice presentation as well. It sounds to me that this person was unprofessional and sarcastic. Not someone who should be in customer service. I am sorry you had this experience.

  3. Good morning! Just had a chat with two elderly aunties outside my neighborhood old folks home. We have a brief chat about religion and they are amazed at the wisdom I have (shyless me haha!) and they are cat lovers too. What a good and short chat with them. One of the elderly aunties her hair is already all silver and white.

    2. It's a Singaporean slang. Another one to make you joyful and happy is, bak chew tak stamp (hokkien) (meaning eyes kena pasted stamps, in another words trying to "scold" or "laugh" at someone being blind, cannot see or find certain things). It is not very nice or wicked to say someone is blind so we use this Singaporean slang.

    3. LOL! You Singaporeans are so creative with your expressions! Well, yesterday I experienced "bak chew tak stamp" when I did not spot an error in a document. Haiz!

  7. Yes, although we usually refer to balsamic as a glaze as too much of it is overpowering (that's why it's not referred to as a sauce) but if one mistakenly calls it, that young man shouldn't be so cocky by pointing out that you said sauce....roll eyes! He should be better informed that you meant the same thing...ish!

    1. Ya, he should have known better and respond differently. A humble apology would have been appropriate.

  8. Good say, time seem like the easiest thing one can offer to someone but not many can/willing to do it. :(
