Satisfying Mum's Craving

Update : Superthai has closed down.

It was a Saturday, a day before my parents were due to fly off to Kuala Terengganu. Mum had earlier expressed her wish to eat deep fried pork knuckle.

Mum loves her oink oinks and she enjoys fatty pork belly and pork knuckles. I guess I take after her. It's in our genes :) And I know a place for a great crispy pork knuckle-Superthai@Damansara Uptown!

So there we were at 12:00pm. Sharp. That's me and my OCD. If I want to go to a popular restaurant, I make sure I go there when they open on the dot. I do not want to be faced with a crowd.

After looking at the menu, mum was also very keen on the Mango Kerabu. That's my favorite too.

It was as good as we expected. This is one kerabu that I will always order at any Thai restaurant.

We requested for the Kai Lan with Tom Yum Paste to be changed to a simple stir fry with garlic for my dad who cannot take spicy food. The stir fried kai lan was simple and yet so delicious.

I also ordered a Tom Yum Soup to share with my brother. The soup now comes in a little pot.

It was fabulous. Just as good, if not better than when I had it the first time. It hit all the right spots and if you are a tom yum fan, you must have the Superthai tom yum.

Next up is something I was curious about. Soft Bone Chicken Knuckle. It was a hit all round because it was tasty and super crunchy. The deep fried dried chillies and kafir lime leaves added a lot of oomph to the dish.

As we were finishing our 4 dishes, the Pork Knuckle in Sweet and Sour Sauce made it's appearance. I wished that it could have come to the table much sooner to be enjoyed with the other dishes but I guess this one requires a longer preparation time.

It was worth the wait. The skin was crispy and crunchy and the meat was tender. I was happy to see my mum and dad enjoying the food. And of course my brother too :)

There was a bit of a boo boo with the coffee that my brother ordered. He said it tasted weird. So I took a sip. It had a strong taste like lemongrass or some herb.

When I brought this up with the server, she was alarmed and brought a sample of the black coffee for me to taste. Oh dear, it had that weird taste too. She looked worried but I am uncertain if she understood our complaint.

My brother sent the coffee back and we were not charged for it. Now, out of curiosity I later googled Thai Coffee and yikes!! Apparently cardamon is infused into the coffee and it looks like we were the big boo boos. Paiseh, paiseh.... So now we know not to order coffee here.

At the end of our meal, the server asked if we wanted desserts but we declined because we had another agenda. But still, she returned with a complimentary dessert for all of us.

It was bananas cooked in coconut milk. I don't know what it's called but I know it as Pengat Pisang. It was a sweet ending to our excellent meal.

  3. The food looks good. Would like to try the pork knuckle for my spouse but damanasara uptown seems to be a parking nightmare. Is it better now with underground parking?

    1. The parking problem still exists because many people are reluctant to park at the underground or multi-level parking.

  4. Oh, I love this place! I wonder why they serve Mango Kerabu with a side of shredded iceberg lettuce....to fill up the plate? :D Ah, I remember the kai lan...try it with tom yum paste next time when you're not dining with your dad (so good!). Since you like fried chicken soft bone (I don't), you can order that when you next eat Japanese (nankotsuage). I actually like Thai coffee (doesn't taste weird) but not all Thai places do it well though (I like the one in Boat Noodles). Hmmm....I can guess what's your next agenda! ;D

    1. Me too, the food here is great! I feel that the serving portions are a bit small. The mango kerabu and the kai lan was not enough for 4 of us. OK, will look out for nankotsuage at Japanese restaurant :) As for the Thai coffee, I don't like the taste :(

  5. Wow! The food looked really deliiiiicious and spicy good. I would love to try this place. The rectangle plates are unique making the kerabu look appetizing.. I must feast on their Pork Knuckles too! TQ

When my late mum used to make her Kluay Puad Chee, I thought it was a Nyonya Pengat Pisang until I ate them all over Thailand. LOL

I think the very best Pork Knuckles I have eaten in KL are at The Swine and Paris Restaurant (SS2)

  7. Hi Phong Hong, I have the brown claypot. Didn't know it can be used to serve tom yum. This month, I have been eating various home-cooked Thai dishes but haven't tried these that you have ordered. Couldn't imagine how vast is the varieties.

    1. Hi Kimmy! The brown pot is very small and cute. It keeps the tom yum warm longer compared to serving in a bowl. Yes, I see that you have been cooking Thai and tempting me. LOL!

  8. A lovely spread! There are two interesting dishes that interest me.

I like the the Soft Bone Chicken Knuckle with deep fried chilies and kaffir lime leaves. I can imagine the exploration of flavours on the taste buds.

Deep fried pork knuckle with sweet and sour sauce is another dish that arouse my interest. It reminded me of stuffed pork knuckle from Singapore. It was stuffed with a
medley of chestnuts, Chinese dried mushrooms etc and braised in caramelised soya sauce/thick soya sauce. We had it now and then (pork knuckle is fiddly to debone) when I was staying with my mum's friend, a professional caterer and excellent cook. She managed to replicate the famous stuffed pork knuckle from Singapore. Hers was so good and not greasy at all.

    1. The stuffed pork knuckle that you speak of sounds so delicious. I have not come across it as yet. It must be a very specialized dish. I wonder if it is available at any of the Chinese restaurants here. Must find out :)

    2. I think the stuffed pork knuckle was only available from one or two eateries in Singapore at that time. I didn't take much notice of the details as I was a kid. It was sooooo good.

I have not seen it in restaurants menus.

Perhaps one of the Singaporean bloggers can tell us where to source it from Singapore.

  12. Hi Phong Hong,
Yes Thai coffee always infuse with something that we may not get used to the taste. Soft Bone Chicken Knuckle ... pardon me being a "mountain tortoise" have not heard of this. All the dishes look so yummy!
