I was again at Jujube Vegetarian House, Damansara Jaya, because I was curious about their Nasi Lemak.
But it was still a tad sweet for me. So I went in with my straw and jabbed at the lemon slices and lime to extract more juice out of them.
There you go, the vegetarian nasi lemak. Three slices of cucumber, half a boiled egg, peanuts, some crispy stuff in place of ikan bilis, blanched long beans, brown rice and "mutton" curry.
The curry was quite good. What you would expect of Chinese style curry. I did not like the crispy ("ikan bilis") bits because it had a five spice powder taste to it.
The rice is plain brown rice, not cooked in coconut milk, so there is no nasi lemak taste to it. The sambal, although unlike usual nasi lemak sambal, was (to me) outstanding in its own right.
I believe kaffir lime leaves (daun limau purut) is an ingredient which gave the sambal a very aromatic and distinct flavor. I loved this sambal but there was so little of it!
So I complained to the boss who told me that I could request for more. The reason why they put so little is because some customers may not like too much sambal.
Overall, I thought this was pleasant enough but if I want nasi lemak, the real deal is the way to go. But if you are vegetarian, this is pretty good.
What I could suggest to the restaurant is to mix the rice with a teaspoon of coconut oil (preferable cold pressed coconut oil) to infuse coconut aroma into the rice. That would make the nasi lemak more like nasi lemak hah..hah..

Yup, no vegetarian nasi lemak for me....ever! Nasi lemak with brown rice is so wrong...on so many levels...lol! I want the real deal...with coconut infused white rice! My eyes were drawn to the cucumber which is well past its prime...and if I get a lemon-infused drink, sweet or not, I would jab at the slices of lemon pronto! ;D
ReplyDeleteLOL! Ya lah, those of us who have tasted regular nasi lemak would not be so thrilled with the vegetarian version.
DeleteDear PH, I love the quote you are sharing at the end of your post. I really needed this now, so the timing is perfect.
ReplyDeleteThe presentations in the dishes is attractive. I am not too familiar with the food. I find curry a bit too hot and spicy, but I do love rice. Both white and brown rice.
I am glad the quote helped! This dish is a traditional Malay dish and I much prefer the regular version. Me too, white or brown rice work for me!
DeleteThe flowers at The Starling are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteThey are fake though. LOL!
DeleteThey are still pretty.
DeleteI have eaten vegetarian nasi lemak before at different eateries. Didn't pay so much attention to them so all passed 😂
ReplyDeleteOh, so u don't like the taste of five spice powder 🤢
Have a fabulous Friday ❤️
LOL! Just eat, no need to think so much. Five spice powder is ok in certain dishes but not nasi lemak. Have a fabulous weekend!
DeleteThis Sunday I am observing vegetarian meals for the whole day. Hahaha, been more than 10 years already. Enjoy your weekends! I would ask for white rice instead of brown rice, as curry goes better with white rice. I don't mind 5 spice powder as I had eaten vegetarian meal with that before. What a nice name for the drink, lemon sunset, got "feel", should "jio" your partner to eat with you also. By the way, does your partner has any religion beliefs? Is he Christian like you too? You can choose to avoid to answer if it is too sensitive. Anyway, doesn't matter too much to me also.
ReplyDeleteGood for you! My partner used to observe that too - on the 1st and 15th of Chinese calendar month. But it was not convenient sometimes, so he stopped. He is not Christian and we both respect each other's religious beliefs.
DeleteAlready planned EWEW, eat what eat where, and WWWW, wear what wear where, for my both weekends, so looking forward! I hope you have a good one too, hopefully I get to read your replies if you have time.
ReplyDeleteWear what wear where! LOL! Please enjoy your weekend!
DeleteI like the vegetarian nasi lemak in papparich, but sadly many outlets have closed down, hence i don't get to eat it nowadays.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that Paparich served vegetarian nasi lemak. I suddenly remembered that I might have had a good vegetarian nasi lemak at BMS Organics.
