Ah Maas Taiwan Rice Roll has opened for business. They are located in between Halla Holla and Fei Fei Crab.
Order is made and paid at the counter.
I was unfamiliar with their rice rolls and was under the impression that they were served in slices (as they appear on the menu), maybe two slices per serving.
So I asked the staff, how do people order? One each? I was told, one per person. Ok. So I got me the Fried Chicken.
Since I was greedy I got me a dessert, the Grass Jelly Taro Sago. The description is "Base ice, grass jelly, taro, sago, coconut milk". I also requested for less sweet.
The cafe is small, neat and compact. As you can see, the seating is a bit cramped. But most of their orders are for takeaway since these rice rolls are perfect food to-go. So indoor seating is not a big issue.
There is also a cosy corner which is suitable if you are here with friends for a nice chill out session.
Ah, now I understand. What you get is a whole roll.
The cross section of the rice roll is very colorful and attractive. You have purple rice, fresh crunchy vegetables, some crispy bits and fried chicken. There is also a sauce which is sweetish and tangy.
It is a bit clumsy to eat as you have to be careful not to let the fillings fall out. As I was eating, the second half roll almost rolled off the wooden board. That would have been embarrassing!
I found the rice roll rather tasty with different textures and flavors. It was also quite filling. If you are a small eater, you may need to share.
As I was finishing one half of my roll, the Kopi C and dessert were served. So I removed my plastic gloves to take photos. I had plastic gloves in my handbag (from a Grabfood order last year LOL!) and put them on to eat the second half of the roll.
I had trouble poking the straw through the plastic covering. The plastic cover was thick and the straw was flimsy. But I managed to poke it through.
After taking a sip, I found that the coffee was sweet. So I went to the counter to complain. A staff came over to inform me that the drink had no sugar added, just coffee and milk.
I guess the milk that they use is sweetened. Since the staff offered to replace the drink, without milk, I accepted. When the coffee was served, again I couldn't poke the cover LOL!
The staff took a pen knife to cut through the cover. The coffee was not sweet and was to my liking. It was very commendable that the staff replaced my drink. Kudos!
Now, the dessert.
It was served with two side add-ons which were thick (consistency like condensed milk). I tasted both. The dark one is black sugar while the white one tasted like coconut.
I did not use the add on flavorings and mixed the contents of the dessert. Of course it was sweet, desserts are supposed to be sweet.
I'm afraid I did not like the taste because there was milk in the dessert. Based on the description on the menu, I was under the impression that this dessert contained coconut milk and not milk.
So I abandoned the dessert because I could not eat it due to the milk (I don't like the taste) and (too) sweet.
This was the mess after I finished the roll. I am not one to leave a mess for the staff to clear. So I put the whole lot into a plastic bag that I had in my carry bag.
Based on my experience, I found the rice rolls tasty and filling. As for coffee, be informed that anything that contains milk might be sweet (avoid if you are like me and do not like sweet coffee). As for their desserts, they are not for me (due to milk and too sweet).
Would I come back? Yes, but for only for the tasty rice rolls (and Kopi O).

Dear friend, I love the green π chairs, my favourite colour, in this place.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of rice roll before, but I do love rice π π
It's interesting how you use the term take away and here in Canada π¨π¦ we call it take out.
Thank you so much for, dear friend.
Green is such a lovely color and it is my favorite too! Oh yes, here we say "take away". The first time someone used the term "to go" I did not understand it as that's what they say in USA. I am more familiar with your term "take out".
DeleteIf a drink ended being too sweet after I've taken a sip, I'd usually just bear with it or abandon it. It's not in my DNA to complain or have them replaced it for me..lol! Oh, so these Taiwan rice rolls are like wraps...I wonder how they got the sprinkling of sesame seeds on top? Cut it open, sprinkle and then close it back...hahahaha! Ooo, I also don't like milk taste in desserts. >.<
ReplyDeleteWell, if I specified "no sugar" in my coffee and it came sweet, I will complain LOL! But I did not make a fuss about the dessert even though there was no mention of "milk" in the description. Yes, they cut the roll and then sprinkle the sesame seeds.
DeleteThe rice roll sure looks too big to e like that. They should cut the roll into slices like sushi. I think the sweet milk that they used have those fake fragrance. I dislike those too. Once I also abandoned the milk red bean ice shavings dessert in Taipei because of the sweet milk fake fragrance. π
ReplyDeleteI would have preferred to eat the rolls in sliced form but that takes too much work I guess.
DeleteGood that you took the wrappers and etc away with you to discard in the office πππ
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review of this new shop.
Have a good day πΉ
I did not feel good leaving the mess behind LOL!
DeleteThese rice rolls are sold in 7-11 & Family Mart in Taiwan. I miss them so much!!! Hope we can have rice rolls in our convenient stalls. They are way better than onigiri. Good tht you clear the tableπ
ReplyDeletehmmmnn...they don't have trash bin?
I did not see any trash bins, maybe there is one but they must have put it at the back. I tried onigiri once from Family Mart. It was not too bad.
DeleteOnce I had fish balls meal, I think it was fish maw soup with fish balls and white rice at Changi airport terminal 3, the fish ball I was trying to eat, dropped nto the floor and bounced, I signalled to the waitress and she laughed, she found it farnee and comical, sometimes you can turn embarrassing moments into moments that make you laugh, if you are someone who can see the lighter side of life. Lol!
ReplyDeleteLOL! That was funny!
DeleteSame here, I don't like to leave my table messy after eating, I will try to clean and organize the table after that. Guess it just reflected the kind of person you are.
ReplyDeleteYa, I would sometimes take the serviette and wipe the table LOL!
