Finally I arrived at Mercat Barcelona which came highly recommended by my blogger friend Kris of Eat What, Eat Where.
Well, it was not a smooth day. I went to the office but was feeling blah, not in the mood to work (it was Saturday after all).
My brother was supposed to pick me up at 11:00 am but he was slightly delayed. Then we made our way to 1 Mont Kiara.
When we got there (our first time) we found that it is an old mall with a very narrow ramp leading to the basement carpark. My brother navigated his (new) car very gingerly, swearing all the way. LOL!
After we parked, we noted that the parking lots were very narrow (which caused a problem which I will tell later).
Then we went looking for the restaurant and had to seek assistance from the concierge.
Now, let's get to it, our orders.
Coffee addicts that we are, a hot Latte for my brother and an ice Cappuccino for me. My brother said the latte was good (though not as good as coffee at Marta's). As for my cappuccino, it was thin but I won't fault them for their coffee.
Gambas Al Ajilo. This was good and I am sorry that we can't help making comparison to the one (which we prefer) at Marta's Kitchen.
Fardos Ibericos, my brother's choice. This is described as "Iberico ham fardos with truffle cream and apple compote". When we chewed into it, there was something crunchy like crackers inside. Yes, this was very nice.
Bread was served to soak up the lovely oil in the Gambas Al Ajilo. We loved the crusty bread which was fresh and fluffy.
I wanted to order the Boquerones En Vinagre (Spanish anchovies marinated in vinegar and roasted red pepper) when my brother piped up - Tacos De Cangrejo (Homemade Crab Tacos with Avocado).
My brother described this as tasting like "tuna mayo" and we could not taste crab because there was too much mayonnaise.
We also ordered half rack Iberico Loin Ribs marinated "al andalus" style. The meat was tender (falling off the bone) and moist and well marinated though the flavors did not wow us. The ribs were served with thinly sliced sauteed potatoes.
It would not be fair to compare these ribs to the ones we had at Marta's Kitchen because the marination/seasonings are not the same. So I shall reserve comment.
And then the Paella De Marisco (Seafood Paella with Cuttlefish, Prawns, Mussels and Clams) was served in a paella pan, as it should be.
This is where the presentation beats Marta's (which is served in a plate). The paella was very moist (wet) and I would have preferred it drier. There was no crust (which some people love) at the bottom of the pan. The flavors were spot on, robust and fabulous.
I think my brother did not quite enjoy this as much (I found out he had a nasi lemak breakfast earlier LOL!) and surrendered before even half of the pan was eaten. So I plodded on happily and ate as much as I could (there was a little bit leftover).
But guess what? The naughty boy wanted Churros.
No matter how full you are, there is always space for desserts, right? And magically we could both finish these Spanish Churros with Chocolate Sauce.
My brother commented that there was not enough sugar sprinkled on the churros and that the chocolate sauce was not sweet. Well, perhaps some sweet taste would have been nice but I was OK with the bitter chocolate sauce.
All in all we had mixed feelings about Mercat Barcelona. I would prefer to blame that on our unsophisticated tastebuds rather than the execution of the dishes. Or maybe we were not in a positive mood to actually enjoy what we were eating.
Now back to the carpark. Earlier when we parked, there was another car that joined us at that lot and parked to our left. The right hand side was vacant.
When we returned after our meal, a car was parked to our right. So we were sandwiched between two cars and the space between us was very narrow.
My poor brother had trouble getting into the car and had to attempt from my side. But he found the maneuvering a bit tricky. So he went back to his side, wedged himself into the narrow opening and managed to squeeze himself in. It was indeed a stressful day. LOL!
Well, we made our way out, again with my brother navigating the ramp carefully (while noting the scratches on the ramp wall) and we were soon on our way out of the mall.
No regrets in spite of our less than exuberant mood and muted culinary experience. If there is one thing discouraging us from returning, it is the parking experience rather than what we had at Mercat Bercelona.
I enjoyed the paella (maybe can request for it to be cooked drier) and the Gambas Al Ajilo (I loved the accompanying bread). There are many other dishes to be had but I don't think the bro wants to come here again. LOL!

Good morning 🌞
ReplyDeleteThank you for the review. The narrow basement car park sure sounds scary. I wonder are there roadside valid car parks so no need go down to the basement.
Good morning! I don't know about roadside parking. It is a very congested area.
DeleteI would like to try the paella because I don't mind not having the crust. 😂 But thanks for the mayo overdose warning for that crab tapas. Luckily your brother managed to squeeze into his car else need to wait for the two cars to move either one.
ReplyDeletehah..hah... I feel sorry for my brother. But seriously, whoever decided on the width of the parking lots obviously does not have much common sense or the developer was trying to maximize usage of the space.
DeleteHave a good week ahead! 😸
ReplyDeleteThanks, you too!
DeleteGood morning 🌅🌄 have a good week ahead!
ReplyDeleteGood morning! Thanks, you too!
DeleteTry Bocado if you’re looking for Spanish food
ReplyDeleteNoted! Thanks for the suggestion.
DeleteThe food photos looked so presentable and colourful though there were some hits and misses. At least you and your brother tried, never try never know. Guess there won't be a second time cos your family would prefer Marta's kitchen and parking was an issue.
ReplyDeleteYup, never try, never know. I think so, we will stick to what we love and parking at Marta's is definitely more convenient.
DeleteHi dear friend, your photos are lovely! Ribs....mmmmm! LOL! I like the mural as well in one of your photos. The seafood...I have tried mussels and prawns (I think they are jumbo shrimp here, not 100% certain, though). I have never tried cuttlefish or clams...not sure I would want to. And a question....are clams the same thing as oysters? Are there oysters inside the clams?
ReplyDeleteThe presentation of the dishes is very nice!
Well, clams and oysters are shellfish/mollusks but they are not the same. They are very popular items for seafood lovers and pricey especially oysters. I love raw oysters although I know of the health risks involved but it is very very rare that I get the opportunity to eat some.
DeleteFirst of all, I'm sorry (as well as disappointed) that my highly recommended Mercat didn't turn out to be the experience you and your brother were looking for. Wow, for once, our tastebuds really differed!
ReplyDeleteFardos Iberico & Crab Taco (no comment as I didn't try these)
Spanish Shrimps (I didn't try the one at Martha's) & Iberico Ribs (this I agree was ok but wasn't a standout)
Paella - all my friends perferred this to Martha's for the reason the rice was moist (we actually found Martha's too dry) with more intense seafood flavour (but you prefer drier and that's where our difference lie) and we had soccarrat (sometimes I feel it's dinner time when the chief chef is there and that's when the food cooked is better...the kwai lo chef/owner actually came round to ask us what we thought about the food).
Churros - your description of the churros (of not enough sugar, I hate overly dusted churros and a not sweet chocolate sauce) sounds perfect for me & my friends (as we don't like overly sweet things).
Last but not least, I can't remember about the parking much but had no complaints from my friends (and one of them drives a big MPV...that means your brother's car is even bigger...lol).
In the end, you and your brother won't be returning to Mercat and my friends won't return to Martha's...but that's fine, we are all different and we embrace differences. ^_~
Oh, please don't be sorry! You were there 2023 (wonder if you were back in recent times?) and things could have changed or as you mentioned, the main chef is there only in the evenings (when there are more customers), so the cooking could be different. Of course we could also have different taste when it comes to Spanish. LOL! I did enjoy the paella even though I preferred if it was drier. Maybe it should have been rested longer for the liquid to dry up a bit. Yes, let's embrace differences! Marta's for me and Mercat for you!
DeleteNo, I've not been back in recent times...but a return visit is on the cards though (and that's something we don't often do as my friends prefer to try out new places coz there are so many new places to try...lol)! ;) Sometimes I think an untoward event before (like terrible parking in your case or pouring rain like in mine) can ruin a meal before it even begins...haha. The other is ordering too much food that makes us too full (and end up enjoying the meal a lot less than we should...we had a recent such experience). Wow, looking back, you two did have quite a lot of food...3 starters + 2 mains + 1 dessert (compared to our 2 starters + 2 mains for the four of us)...lol!
Deletehah..hah... I remember your rainy incident and I have not been back to that place ever since. It is true that events prior to the meal can affect our mood and even tastebuds. Well, if you do return to Mercat, I hope you blog about it. I also hope to read about your recent dine out, if you are posting that is.
DeleteThat tacos is way too much mayo....
ReplyDeleteYup, less is more!
