Lousy Soup On A Datenite

Ooops! We went to Ke Ren Lai, The Starling again. LOL!

This time we were seated here, where we could see the goings on outside the restaurant.

In spite of swearing off fancy sweet drinks, I could not resist this one, the Ice Bayberry Jasmine (anything with the word "berry" gets me).

I requested for "less sweet". It was indeed a very refreshing drink which we both enjoyed. "It's like Ribena", said my partner.

This Minced Meat Skewer was my partner's choice for sharing.

And because he is very much a soup man, he ordered this Lotus Root Nourishing with Dried Scallop Soup Set but was disappointed that the protein was chicken.

He expected pork ribs because that is the protein of choice when homecooked. But well, chicken is more affordable, hence that's what the restaurant used. Perhaps they should have specified that in the menu.

Sad to say the soup was diluted and bland with the chicken cooked until it was way too soft. The Pig's Stomach with Pork Pepper Set that he had on our earlier visit fared much better.

I made a better pick. This is the Golden Fried Pork Cutlet with Chicken Floss Set.

The pork cutlet was well seasoned and fried until crispy. Although I do not like chicken (or pork) floss, I did not mind it at all because as it did not affect the taste of the pork cutlet.

My choice of side was again the tofu and century egg.

I also tried this condiment of crispy chilies and found it very pleasing and spicy hot.

My partner was in a playful mood and he snapped my photos.

Hey, lahling! Cut it out! hah..hah..hah...

Well, it was a very good dinner for me though my partner's was disappointing. I told him, next time, order something else and not the soup.

Well, knowing my partner, the man might choose another soup set. LOL!

Note : Because the drink was less sweet, we did not get leg cramps that evening. Yay!

  2. Indeed your partner knows his soups...coz for soup people we like them boiled with pork ribs, not chicken...coz it's just not as tasty with chicken...more so if it's not kampung chicken! Like you I also can't resist any berry drinks (and I'm glad this one didn't give you leg cramps...lol). Now that you're PH The Meat Lover (who eats carbs) and not PH The Carnivore anymore, I'm sure your partner is much happier that he can now have date nights with you again...hehe! ;) P/S: You're still looking youthful and slim, my dear.

    1. My partner's late mum used to boil pork ribs with lotus root and red dates and that was how I learnt about this soup. My family are not soup people LOL! Oh ya, I am now more flexible with my food but my partner still helps me finish my bowl of rice. P.S. Thank you for the compliments my dear! I was like what the Malays say "hidung kembang" and "pijak semut pun tak mati" after your very flattering words. LOL!

  3. Yay! No legs cramps. πŸ‘
I also couldn't resist any food with berries.
I even bought frozen bayberries to eat. Another name for bayberries is waxberries. They are the same.

  6. Hey! Was it coincidence? I was just reminiscing what I had when I was a kid, white porridge with chicken (or pork) floss and they were enjoyable and yummy! Those were the times when my mom needed to make simple and fuss free meals for us.

    1. I know many people enjoy meat floss (in Hokkien it is "bak hoo" right?) but somehow I don't.

  7. What a nice meal at Ke Ren Lai though what your partner had was kind of disappointing. What it comes to soup, the timing of the heat/fire is important, for example for lotus roots soup, the 火侯 must be just right so that lotus roots are well cooked and chewable enough. My mom is expert on that. So far the only soups I had tried made were watercress soup (I tried with pork belly and red dates before) and bkt soup. And they passed my own tests. Muahaha. Next time maybe I can try ABC soup with red carrots and potatoes without the corns 🌽 as I do not like to eat corns unless they are corn bits.. For the protein usually my mom used pork ribs. Maybe I can try with poultry since I am avoiding red meats. Hee hee.

    1. I only learnt to appreciate soups after I met my partner. My mum did not cook soups regularly, so it was not part of my diet. Now I love my own homecooked soup which is very simple. I bet your mum's soups are delicious! I might have two bowls hee..hee...

  8. Now, I kind of change my diet, I can take spicy once in a while like spicy kimchi or maybe sambal chili etc as I know chili can help in metabolism ζ–°ι™ˆδ»£θ°’

  9. My dinner last night was premium fast food/processed food from Japan Mos Burger. Muahaha. They were grilled teriyaki chicken burger with raw green lettuce and Mayo sauce. Chicken nuggets with mustard sauce. Croquette potatoes and comforting corn soup. Slurps!

    1. It's not a public holiday here in Peninsular Malaysia. It's a holiday in East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak). I look forward to the weekend, thanks! I wish you a great weekend!

    2. Why? I am sure there are many Christians in West Malaysia also.
