BBQ For Two @ Gu On, The Starling

After visiting Gu On, The Starling with my partner (where we did not have BBQ), I revisited with my brother.

We did not bring mum along because this restaurant is located on the third floor and because of mum's impaired mobility, going up and down via escalator or lift can be cumbersome.

We will take mum out another time and the venue would have to be at street level with easy parking and easier for mum to navigate. Besides restroom location is also a point to consider.

Kar Hiong is one such ideal place because we can park very near the restaurant and walk in together. An outing should be stress free for all parties. On this occasion, I met my brother outside Jaya Grocer and we went up to the restaurant together.

Now back to our lunch. We ordered the 2 pax set with Pork Belly Bone-in (smoked), Pork Hidden Back, Pork Bone Soup and Cream Cheese Hotteok.

Because we eat a lot (hah...hah...) we added another meat from the ala carte menu - the Smoked Beef Short Ribs.

These were the sauces and side dishes.

Ah, that is a more complete picture with the Pork Bone Soup and a head of lettuce.

We requested for the meat to be cooked in the kitchen and it came served like this. Can you see the smoke?

Besides the set and extra order of meat, we also got the Perilla Colds Noodles.

It was as good as the first time I tasted it.

Oh, we also got the Seafood Pancake.

I'm afraid I forgot to snap a pic of the Hotteok which were like buns (with sweet cream cheese filling) and were very tasty.

For drinks, my brother had the Elderflower & Lychee Breeze described as "kaffir lime infused Vodka with Elderflower and Lychee - citrusy floral and refreshing".

I had a sip but could taste ginger instead of kaffir lime. My brother also tasted ginger.

I had the Oolong Kombucha which was barely sweet and very refreshing.

One standout for me among the sides was this Spring Onion Salad

Another side was an Ice Kimchi which was shredded frozen kimchi. I was not a fan as I found it weird to eat icy kimchi.

The Pork Bone Soup was delicious and overall, the BBQ was enjoyable although the beef was a bit tough.

My brother and I share the grilled garlic, split right in the middle hah..hah... My brother also went to the top-up counter to get us more kimchi.

I have since returned to try the lunch which I will post later.

  4. Oh, so I take it that the earlier Gu On experience was better (tough beef is not pleasant). I had the unfortunate same experience (of beef) yesterday at The Rustic Grill! :O It didn't quite turn out to be what I expected...haiz! :'(

    3. Oh dear, dear. I have not visited them in recent times, so I might be able to imagine why you did not have a positive experience. They started out quite well but have not been able to maintain or improve.
