When You Are Not In The Mood To Bake

Don't. Just don't. Because whatever it is that you bake will reflect your state of mind. Whether you are feeling crappy or psychotic, it will show. Trust me.

I found this bag of cookie dough in the freezer. Oh yes. Now I remember. It was that one time when I thought I wanted to bake some cookies.

After I put the dough together, I was suddenly filled with a sense of dread. DREAD. Borderline psychosis was setting in. So. I bunged the dough into the freezer and became sane again.

Then one fine day, I opened the freezer and saw the frozen dough. Nope. I wasn't in the mood. But I needed freezer space (as always). So I thawed the dough in the fridge.

The next day, I had a brainwave. I shall bake Daim cookies. You know what is Daim? It's those Swedish candy, almond toffee covered in milk chocolate. I seemed motivated.

But it happened again. And this was the result.

And this.

That was exactly how I felt as I was forming the dough. My brain all melted and exploded with the DREAD of baking cookies. My mood swings are phenomenal, I tell you.

But these are cookies. Made of butter, sugar, eggs and loaded with Daim chocolate. They were good all the same. Just so ugly. Obviously, they do not qualify as Chinese New Year cookies.

So please. Madam. When you are not in the mood, take a break.

I also realize that the point of the post might be lost among some readers and I may jolly well receive comments telling me how delicious and wonderful my cookies are. And perhaps a recipe request or two.

To that I raise a toast. Salud to my mental health 😝

    1. I have one in and one out. So judging by the result, the Daim should stay in :)

  4. I actually had to google Daim cookies (just to see if they were as ugly as you say they were...hehe!) as I didn't know what they were and how they should look like. Most of them had the chocolate crushed into bits in the cookie and some did look uneven too. I guess it's because you put a whole rectangle piece and it kinda burst? I did find one perfect one (from the more than occasional baker)...is that how it's suppose to look like? Ok, if so, maybe yours not so pretty lah but as long as it's pretty in taste, that's all that matters! ;) Salud :)

    1. heh..heh...I reckon the candy should stay enclosed in the dough (I have one in and one on the dough) so that it won't spoil the look. They were good cookies (had 5 last night) but too sweet on account of the candies.

  5. I also don't know about Daim cookies until I read them here. As long as they are delicious looks do not matter to me. Hope you are feeling more into baking now because cny is near - time to bake cny cookies!

  6. PH, even when I have the mood to bake, it still turn out disastrous.... why leh? I think I do not have the "baking fingers" , that is my deduction but then, I will still try cos I have the baking mode these days, only need to buy the ingredients only. So have to wait till I have the buying mode first! :)

  9. Yes, sometimes when not in the mood, what I cook does not turn out nice, may not even look nice. :( But your cookies look pretty good though.

  10. Compared to the Diam cookies I saw on googles, actually your cookies are not that ugly. It is just that the chocolate melted and sort of went out of place. As long as the taste is good, then enjoy them until you are in the mood to bake better looking ones. Heeheee...

  11. Haha! Love this post. Jovial.

But I feel you. Like my cooking. When I am not in good mood, I "cincai" cook and turn out not so nice. Sigh.

I actually think your cookie is interesting. Not ugly. Sendiri makan, boleh lah if you dont feel like sharing with others. ;)

    1. Me too when it comes to cooking. The taste will be blah. But this cookie, luckily taste good but too sweet. Have to adjust the sugar content.

  12. Agree with you - one needs to be in the mood to bake. Or else, the state of the finished product will be as 'boh chap' as the baker's attitude.

  14. Hee .. hee.. ! Phong Hong, I too was in a very lousy stage to bake many months ago as really too exhausted and 'feed up' with work back then. But now my 'engine' recharge a little. But even if I'm in good mood to bake, sometimes I've failed end products too :(
Cookies ugly it's ok ... taste that's matter.

  19. Ok. I will take note of your 'valuable' advice. But the problem is, even if I have the mood, I won't bake ^_^

I only know Daim Zainuddin. Daim the chocolate, eh I knowlah. Saja aje nak buat perangai sengal ^_^
