Cheat Day@Gantetsu

It's cheat day people! I had been without carbs for 7 days straight and feeling the blues. I also experienced severe fatigue while running errands one day. It was so bad that I wished I could just lay down on the pavement to rest.

So. When my brother suggested ramen for lunch, ah! I could not wait to refuel with some much needed carbs.

We went to Isetan's Eat Paradise hoping to sample some ramen at Musashi but the place was undergoing renovation. So the alternative was Gantetsu.

We were quickly seated and my brother had already made up his mind after browsing the menu outside. I did not know what to choose and followed suit. It was a set meal that came with green tea and gyoza.

Refreshing cold green tea. The best thirst quencher to me .

This is how the set looks like. A big bowl of ramen with three big slices of pork and a whole egg and gyoza on the side.

I'm afraid the gyoza was nothing to shout about. It was doughy and all I could taste was the skin. Not much flavor could be detected from the filling.

I took a tentative sip of the broth. It had a strong taste of ginger. I won't say I was thrilled at first sip. But it was better than the one I had here

Entrance to the kitchen.

The noodles are something like mee kuning (yellow noodles) but thinner. It was springy and had a bite. That's how I like my noodles. The pork slices were a little too firm and it was not so easy to break them to eat with the noodles.

The egg had a soft creamy center. Nice! And it's great that we were given a whole egg and not just half.

Overall, it was nice but I can't say I am crazy over it. My brother likes the one he had at Atria better (which I later discovered is Tokyo Ramen).

When I left Gantetsu, I thought to myself that perhaps ramen is not quite my thing. But last weekend, my brother took me to Tokyo Ramen and boy, what a revelation. Post on that coming up later.

  1. Wanted to order something like this at the Japanese place here that day - the only item on their menu with the egg - the acid test, see if they can pass or not. But it was "not available". Tsk! Tsk!

  2. I wasn't a ramen fan (like you)....until I ate a good bowl of ramen! ;) A good tonkotsu broth shouldn't taste gingerly and I've never had a bowl of ramen where they give you only half an egg (the yolk is soft and slightly runny, so how to cut and give half only...haha!). I see you don't like doughy gyoza too.

Hats off to you for going without carbs for 7 days straight....I wouldn't be able to do that as my hands would shake (from hunger) and I'll feel lethargic too (it's especially more difficult if you're on some kind of meds).

    1. Well, I am now a fan after having the ramen at Tokyo Ramen@Atria. That one was da bomb for me!

Going low carbo is very hard :( But I am eating some carbs now to off set that horrible feeling. I feel much better now.

  3. I always wanted to have such a cat as they have at the kitchen entrance, isn't it cute?

  4. I wonder if you met Mun... how come both of you have blog post of the same place on the same day? Interesting coincidence huh...

Anyway I am pretty sure the ramen you had is better than the ramen I had yesterday for dinner. You'll find out why soon enough. :P

    1. I was there 3 weeks ago, earlier than Mun. I was also surprised she had a post on Gantetsu today :)

Now I know that to enjoy ramen you must go to the right place. Tokyo Ramen at Atria did it for me. It was fantastic!

  8. I like ramen. I haven't had a tonkatsu for over almost a year now. I'm sure the vendor have raised his price by now. Craving for it now! He only gave one very thin slice of caramelised pork. Granted, his ramen were consistent and were the presentation.

I, too don't like doughy gyoza, bread and Chinese pastry.

    1. To get good ramen you have to know where to go, that's what I learnt from this experience. The one I had at Tokyo Ramen was really good and convinced me that ramen is very delicious!
