She's Hot. I'm Not.

FAT is a dirty word. These days we don't say fat but we say plus sized. In other words, women like me have more flesh than you. Flesh, not fat, alright?

No offence ladies, I'm one of you. You skinny ones, please step aside. You are at the wrong conference.

Now that we've got that straight, let me bring you back to the days when fat plus sized women were celebrated as a thing of beauty. Oh yes. Fat = Beautiful. I was born in the wrong era.

That would be the Renaissance era circa 1300 - 1600. That was a time when realism was a way of expression (air brushing, plastic surgery and special effects did not exist then) and women were considered beautiful and sexy if they were fat. Hah!

Somewhere along the line, some wise guy changed all that. Now, I want to haul that person up for questioning and a spanking or two. But chances are, that person is already dead and gone but his legacy still survives to this day and we fat girls, I mean big girls, are sidelined and made to feel ugly.

Then later on I learnt that in certain societies, big is beautiful. Case in point Mauritania, a country in West Africa, where girls are force fed to fatten them up for marriage. Imagine that. A fat camp! They even have professional force-feeders to get the job done. The food they are fed on - millet, goat/camel milk, dates, figs, couscous with oil - not so appetizing if you ask me.

All in all, I say, let's embrace diversity. Just as we accept people of different races and cultures, let us also accept and learn to appreciate different shapes and sizes.

When I was a child, it was my mum who initiated food restriction and exercise to make me lose weight. Mum was an advocate of diet and staying slim. She used to jump rope almost everyday to maintain her figure and she looked great in sarong kebayas. Growing up with that sort of standard kind of intimidated me as I was always reminded of my ample girth.

Look, I am not blaming mum for my obsession with my weight and negative body image. She meant well. Had she not intervened, I would be as big as a house with neither the will nor means of keeping my weight in check.

I think those big girls up there are gorgeous. They obviously have the correct infrastructure

Heck, if I could look half as hot as they do at this size, I really don't mind a few extra pounds hanging off me. But no, the only thing hot about me is my hot flashes.

  1. I like this post of yours. Who says big can't be beautiful! Who cares if you're big on the outside as long as you're beautiful on the inside which I'm sure you are, my friend :)

  4. Haha. Enjoy reading this.

I am not the size 0 or the skinny type. You can say, I have heavy top. Only my arms and legs are skinny; not my body. ^^

  6. one of the things i appreciate about aging is that i find myself less hung up about appearance, compared to when i was in my 20s and 30s. i've had my skinny years and my heavy years, and i'm now in my heavy years, but i don't really mind, as long as people don't carelessly point it out. it does annoy me when they do - i have an aunt who says to me, 'you gain weight, you must exercise' every time i call my family on the phone in malacca, and a friend who snaps at me, 'you fat now' when i try on a t-shirt at uniqlo ... so i end up phoning my family less often and ignoring that friend when she asks to go shopping. i guess my point is that if we all stopped recklessly pointing out each other's flaws, we wouldn't feel unnecessarily insecure about ourselves :)

    1. I so agree with you! Right now, I am more accepting of my less than svelte physique. And you are right, people should be more tactful and not make such blunt remarks. The world would be a slightly happier place hah..hah..

  8. All those recommended eating plans should emphasize that the plans are to ensure a healthy body and not about beauty.

  9. I like this post PH, you have written this post in such a light and funny way, it is alright to be bigger size, fat is not a problem as long as we are happy and confident, most important as long as we are healthy, I am on the heavy side too and my younger sister always remind me that I am fat, or rather she will joke about it, I have a heavy bottom (belly, butt and legs fat) so sometimes she will joek that I have elephant legsbut I think she means no harm

  10. They have pretty faces, that is the issue why the are plus size models😀I am not on a diet, I see however many women who are slimer than me although I feel I am all right with my weight and I owe it to every day gym which is my addiction, well other habits are worse😀

    1. Hi Amelia! That's the spirit! We must be able to enjoy our food lah if not, life not worth living. Like what you said, moderation is key. Which is my problem because most of the time, I go gila and eat like mad. hah..hah...

  12. Luckily I back scrolled and spotted this post! Else there would be questions like "Why RG not commenting on this post??" >.<

Actually I hate the word "curvy" being used to describe fat. Curvy = hourglass figure, that and fat is different. But contrary to popular belief, I have no problems with fat ladies. In fact, my first girlfriend (oops) was the chubby type (she still is). Heck, I'm friggin' fat myself!

What I cannot stand, is fat ladies who think they are runway models and wear clothes like tube tops and tight jeans or mini skirts. I mean, come on... I think it is all a matter of how you carry yourself. There are many ways to be fat and still be sexy and attractive and nose bleed inducing. Like Meghan Trainor for example. Or some of the photos you posted. I think the important thing is to acknowledge yourself, be yourself and be proud of yourself. The moment you try to dress like the opposite of yourself, then... I'm sorry to say but, disaster...

Also might I add, humans are sensory creatures. Of course we will be attracted by looks. And scent sometimes. Of course, inner beauty is very important, but to say that we should not bother about appearances is to deny being human. That's what I think anyway.

I'm ready for the probable outrage from some folks now...

    1. Ah, you got that right! I often think to myself what are on these ladies mind when they dress in clothes that look great on slim girls but not on those with ample frames. Of course, they will shoot back at us and tell us that it is their right to choose what they wear and who are we to judge. Whatever.....

Well, I like your comment very much and you have a wonderful attitude towards big girls.

  13. I like this post! Who says fat people cannot be beautiful! Both in appearance like those photos above and as a person and has a beautiful heart. It doesn't matter whether they are fat or skinny, most important is I enjoy their company. I am also on the heavy side, ha ha with a big and heavy bottom! Some will call me pear shape! Most important is a healthy body.

  14. Frankly, I am forever on diet, because I never satisfied with my body. In fact, I like to see those plus size women who are still looking good and having confidence in themselves.

Be it slim or fat, women must have confidence in their appearance then they will so beautiful.
