My Curry Fix@Krishna Curry House

Two Saturdays ago, my brother and I found ourselves at Krishna Curry house, our favorite haunt for banana leaf rice. It was a much anticipated visit for me, who was still on a carbohydrate eating binge. Tsk!

Carbs bring me much comfort after all the stress at the office and it works just like a drug. Ooops! Carb addict and not drug addict :D Well, it has been a source of joy and misery - misery in the waistline and hip department. I have been wearing my fat pants on a few of our outings. Hey, what are you laughing at?

Krishna Curry House used to be located at Jalan 222 and now they are in Sungei Way (quite near our favorite Bak Kut Teh joint). We simply love their curries and though we have tried other banana leaf restaurants, this is the one we always go back to.

We usually come early, between 11:30am and 12:00pm to avoid the crowd. The last few times, it was rather quiet but that day, the place was almost full seating capacity. So we had to seat quite far back, opposite the toilet. But no worries because they have a nice wooden divider to block the view. Besides, it was convenient if I had to visit the loo hah..hah...

What I like is the use of real banana leaves. Not like that other place which gives us plastic sheets that don't even look like banana leaves. And then there's this other place which uses plastic plates in the shape of banana leaves. You can't beat the real thing, you know. It's just not the same.

This is a place where you cannot avoid rice. You simply cannot. If you are on low carb, get out of here. This is not the place for you. There is no way you can enjoy the offerings here without a good heap of rice. And please wear loose pants with adjustable waistband hah..hah...hah...

We love the vegetable side dishes. That day they served us spinach, pumpkin and cucumbers. The server left the whole thing at our table and asked us to help ourselves. He must have regretted because we almost polished off the whole lot.

We ordered the chicken varuval, one of our perennial favorites. I cannot resist this dish because it is so delicious. Indian food is very exciting if you ask me. All those combination of spices just makes everything pop.

This is the piece de resistance. The mutton curry served in claypot. We asked for a big one but the pot that came was small. So my brother checked with the server who told us that this was the medium serving because the "besar banyak besar" (the big serving is very big). Later, I realized that yes, this medium one is quite ample as there was quite a lot of meat in there.

Ah, banjir (flood) the rice with lots of gravy!

Or do like my brother, baptize the papadum with gravy.

I was in heaven I tell ya! This was a wonderful lunch.

My brother going at the rice and curry at attack speed.
We have to come back again for the briyani. See, we haven't even finished lunch yet and we were talking about the next one.

If you love mutton curry, you must come for the one here. We made request for bone-in mutton as it is tastier.

On our way home, I told my brother that this is my last carbo binge. Well, that brought on a lot of sniggers. When I told my partner the same thing, he was like "hah..hah..hah...talk only". Haiya, these people have no faith in me.

Anyway, in all seriousness my brother and I pledged that we will go low carb (plus exercise) and eat carbs only once a week. We will aim to get slim by year end. I don't want to look like Jabba the Hutt anymore. I want to become like Princess Leia. Now, that sounds funny, doesn't it? :D

  1. Oooooo...I love banana leaf! My girl loves it so much too. Talking about the rice, I did not know...my first time...they kept scooping for me till my friend said I would have to tell them when to stop. Some popular place in PJ, so very crowded. LOL!!! This one looks good too - I wonder where it is.

  2. Hi Phong Hong, the "real banana leaf" rice is really irresistible with extra kick. Eat this banana leaf rice best to wear kaftan or elastic band pants. hahaha..... Love the curry kambing, look so good.

    Have a nice holiday, regards.

  3. I really super duper hate those plastic banana leaf shaped plates. Those restaurant, already not using real banana leaf, it is like rubbing salt into the would.

You make it sound like it is a sin to eat banana leaf rice. What lah, it is just a (delicious) normal rice meal, with veggies and meat and spices. If BLR is so fatty, why aren't the Indians in India much fatter than they are, right? Right? :D :D

    1. Well, I don't know how to answer your question. What I know is that there are fatties and there are skinnies who eat the same thing with different results :D :D :D

  4. Hi Phong Hong, my response to your low carbo is same as your partner, hahaha! I like banana leaf rice too but we go for the vegetarian version. When I see your post, the first thing that came to my mind, 'Is PH going to enjoy her banana leaf rice with the fingers?' then I saw the fork and spoon. You should try eating with your fingers, from my experience, the curry flavour stays even after you have washed them, hehehe!

    1. Hi Kimmy! hah..hah..you are right in being skeptical hee..hee.. Eating with hand makes it more enjoyable but I don't like to get my hand dirty at the restaurant.

  5. I just had banana leaf rice on Sunday too but mine came in a make-believe banana leaf :'( And they gave us 3 veggies too but not as kind as to leave the whole thing on the table like yours....hee..hee! I have to say Indian food is not one of my favourites (and I don't like mutton at all) but I do have it once in a while. With all that good food, you should try eating with your hands the next time for a complete experience! ;D

    1. Aiya, you don't fancy Indian food. Never mind, different people have different tastes, eh? Yes, I do enjoy eating with my hand but when I am outside, I dislike getting my hand dirty.

I remember you said you don't like banjir gravy in your rice, and you get so pissed when the seller mix & banjirkan your rice with gravy, but I think if eat-in, must banjir gravy and eat with hands baru syiok hor..
