A No Frills Lunch and Durians!

Sometimes the best meals can be had at the most unglamorous places. This Bak Kut Teh joint somewhere in Sungai Way is one such example.

It is just a little shack with very basic amenities. Sorry I couldn't get a bigger shot of the sign. I took it from where my brother parked his car.

Take a look at the television. It's an old relic.

This is the drinks station.

But it doesn't matter. I am not too concerned about the ambiance. I just want good food!

To start off, we were served the "yew char koay" which is dipped into the BKT gravy.

These are the condiments, garlic and chilli padi.

I love this garlic and chilli padi combo with light soya sauce and sweet thick soya sauce.

And now for the piece de resistance.

BKT with all the works. I dug for the precious treasure.

I love this! The other items were pork belly, soft pork ribs, taupok and beancurd skin. The BKT gravy was so flavorful. We plan to come back again.

By the way, anyone knows where I can get pork porridge with liver and other spare parts? Anywhere in PJ and Taman Tun would be great :)

And now, we look for durians. We made our way to Section 19. While stuck in the jam, I noticed this guy perched on the railing of the overhead bridge.

Can you see him? I was worried he might lose his balance. Thankfully, he got off and walked away.

So here we were.

An assortment of durians all ready for the picking.

We stayed away from the Musang King. Expensive stuff that.

My brother chose the D24, D2 and Teka (I think). One each for us, that came to 6 durians. How much I forget. It was his treat hee..hee...

While opening the durians, the worker found some bad fruits. And he replaced them for us. The bad ones were discarded.

We then left with our stash.

Once I reached home, I opened the box.

I don't know which is which. They were all mixed up.

What a satisfying Saturday!

  2. Hmm... durian is one of my favorite but in the US (Texas) don't have any usually frozen. I was wondering if I goes to Singapore in Feb. and visit Malaysia do you think I can find some durians? I don't like to travel in July or Aug cos the weather is so hot!

    1. Hi Christine! February they are not in season. So if you really want durians, you will have to tolerate the heat hah..hah...

  4. Both food are considered "heavy" food. Do you feel satiated when you finished eating the durian?

  5. Oh wow! Both are my favourites! BKT and Durians!! There used to be a stall at Kuchai area selling pork innards porridge (another of my favourite!!), but the stall is no longer there, and I have no idea where they have moved!!
You are making me hungry with the photos of the BKT and the meaty mouth-watering durians! Sniff, sniff, I can almost smell the durians!! Lucky you, got a treat from your brother! :).

  6. aiyoh, you just took the photo from inside the car?? i thought you actually went in to have your BKT and upon entering the shop, you can actually take a clearer close up of the sign, bukan?? haha, or probably you were too excited and did not bother to do that for one more time, hehe.. :P

now tell me that was actually BKT!!! because i only saw fuchuk and taupok and lots of chinese celery in that pot, it doesn't look like the usual BKT i have been having, haha!!! or i actually rarely have BKT, so i am not aware of how the BKT nowadays have "evolved".. and my dad actually cooks BKT at home quite often so i really rarely go out for BKT already..

huh?? what was that man trying to do on the bridge?? i am very puzzled.. if anything happened, it's not just about him falling down, but then he will also cause trouble to the vehicles moving below.. like the chinese always say "want to die die further away and don't put me into trouble"..

fuyoh, durians!! errr, sorry lah, i think you know that i don't like durians right?? but the stall was giving very good service, the worker is very honest to replace a good one for you when he found out the one you chose was a bad one.. some will just care not and dump everything into the packaging and there you bring them home, tsk tsk tsk..

i wanted to say, the last second photo when you opened the box as soon as you reach home.. looks just like some steamed chicken pieces in a container!!! hahahaha.. i can see "wings" and "drumsticks", hehe, opppsss, am i actually feeling hungry that i am having such an illusion?? :p

    1. I was a bit shy lah to take photo of the sign. The place is quite narrow and also the angle not so convenient up close.

Ya, I should have korek-korek the BKT before taking the picture. And I know if you were there, you would discard the corriander (not Chinese celery), betul tak? So lucky you, can eat home cooked BKT so often until BKT is so biasa to you.

I was worried that guy might lose balance and come out in the newspaper the next day. I was relieved when he walked away. Not safe lah to lean or sit on the railing like that.

Lucky you don't like durians because we durian lovers and like drug addicts when they are in season. Earlier I spent quite a lot of money on Musang King durians. They were really awesome. Once in a while, just spend lah. After all it goes into the stomach :)

Haiyah, mana ada like steamed chicken? hah..hah... but yeah, the color reminds me of the steamed ayam kampung. I love to eat those too.

  7. For durians, I like "red prawns" durians, they are sweet and slightly reddish in colour, but long time never eat durian already cos scare of getting sore throat

  12. BKT, I like the soup only, the meat i like too, but I don't dare to eat a lot. Kekeke! You should know why. Durians, I can take a lot, thought durians is fattening too, but to me, it is a type of fruit which has high calories only, kekekeke! I am talking nonsense.

  14. Hi Phong Hong,
Did you prepare more coconut juice or "liang teh" ? Wow BKT + durians = "heaty".
I like BKT too ... but always call for just pork ribs + taupok + soup ...
Oh yes Musang King is very expensive here too. Tasted just a few times (cos can't afford) and I must keep my eye on on the worker and insisted pack separately, make sure the fruits won't get mixed up with the rest... hee .. hee !

    1. Karen, I am OK, not heaty wor.... hee..hee... I should have asked the worker to pack into 3 separate boxes and label them so that I can appreciate which is which.

  15. Hi Phong Hong, my hubby bought about 6-7 durians for just RM 12 at Balik Pulau, Penang in June. Why so cheap? But the quality is good.
