Kuala Terengganu Trip : Day 2

Last Saturday evening, my computer monitor died. Arrrgghhh!!!! I had just come back from Kuala Terengganu and was eager to update my blog. It was fine earlier when I switched on the computer. I was happily writing my first post when I heard the sound of thunder. It was raining and I quickly shut down my computer.

A few hours later when I turned the computer on again, the monitor was blank. You can imagine how frustrated I was. My partner helped me test the monitor and he confirmed that it was kaput. Being the wonderful man that he is, he brought me his brand new monitor and set it up for me the next day. Thank you, my darling!

On to day 2 of my trip. Whenever I go back to Terengganu, one of the things I look forwards to is the food. I know. I am so predictable. My family's favorite place for good Malay food is Kedai Makan Seri Binjai.

So there we were spoilt for choice with so many delicious dishes to choose from.

I did mention in this post that I wanted to try the fish head curry. There were two types of fish, Ikan Merah (RM38.00) and another fish which I forget (RM18.00). My mum insisted that this was her treat and indulged us with the more expensive of the two.

Once our selected dishes were packed and paid, we zoomed home for our feeding frenzy hah..hah....

This was what we had.

The Ikan Merah gulai kepala ikan.

Fried Ikan Keli. I know it does not look very pretty but it was so crispy and delicious.

Sayur Lemak. We love this a lot.

Dry beef curry. Phenomenal!

Sambal belacan. Our must-have condiment. Makes everything taste heavenly.

Gulai daging. Malay style beef curry. This was fabulous.

Ayam Masak Merah. Quite different from the the west coast style. It was very tasty.

And what's this?

My mum's Indian Style Dry Vegetable Curry! It was delicious and was on par with the other dishes we had that day.

Food for four people. We are big eaters.
That was a really good lunch. And in case you are wondering, we had something light for dinner. What it was, I cannot remember hah..hah... So that wraps up day 2.

  1. Oooooo.....I so so so want to go to Trengganu to eat all that there is there. I am sure there are so many things not found elsewhere (like coming to Sibu) and even if they are, there is nothing like going for the real thing! The masak lemak sure is different from mine/ours here.

  2. Hahaha Seri Binjai... same place that all my KT friends go to for the best food in KT. That ikan keli, it is not the appearance that would deter me, this type of fish got lots of bones one, right? No thanks.... Although I might be tempted to break my "don't eat beef in Malaysia" streak with that gulai daging. Yumsss..

    1. RG, the ikan keli got no bones one! The flesh is really sweet and, if got some bones, they're very soft...you can swallow them, no problem.

    2. Oh, you have KT friends :) Yeah, break the rule for once lah, if you go to KT, because the gulai daging is really good.

Kris is right, the fish is so crispy that you can eat the bones.

  6. Fish head curry is the best...but then got very little meat and also very expensive. I love ikan keli too but prefer them with sambal (I'd always get this at the Malay stalls when having nasi campur). And the sayur lodeh...very easy to make it at home.

    1. It's nice to eat at home where you can really dig into the fish head and get all messy! The ikan keli was very flavorful.

  7. I have been hearing about all the heavenly curries and dishes in KT & KB. Till today I have not visited these 2 states. Small Kucing goes there often too and used to complain about the internet lines too. I am not sure the reason this part of the country could not enjoy faster speed lines.

Mothers are best and often give treats to us instead. My late mum always paid for all meals no matter how expensive we ate that often ran up to 4 figures sometimes! I would definitely love to eat this Indian Style Dry Vegetable Curry!! Normally I scooped vegetable curries only at Indian Restaurants.

Looking forward to your Part 3 and Part 4.

  13. oooh, luckily it was just the monitor that kaput.. phew!!! now can have a reason to buy one bigger HD monitor lah, then you can see bigger and clearer, hahaha!! and yeah, i totally understand how potong stim that is.. when you are so enthusiastic in getting something done, and then out of a sudden there is an obstacle and make you cannot do anything to progress.. that is surely sungguh menggeramkan!!! anyway, thanks to your man, he brought you one monitor at once and you can quickly update your blog - and at the same time telling the whole world, "I AM BACK!!"~~ :p

  14. so that's is for your reunion with your primary schoolmates?? eih, show some photos lah, else it seems like the food you had were even more important that the person you met, haha..

anyway, this restoran is sure one hidden gem to me.. no loud signboard and no intentional presentation of the food, everything basic and yet the most authentic.. so many dishes to choose from and i am impressed you get all the stuffs from the same single place.. in KL, i guess we would have to drive here and there to "collect" all of the above..

#1.. fish head?? hmmmm, i "do not know how to eat" this, but give me chunky fish meat and i would be very happy.. :p

#2.. fried ikan keli.. errr, i would have to convince myself that this black stuffs are good, hahahaha!!! okay, i trust PH~~ :D

#3.. sayur lemak!! wah, really very lemak and rich in santan.. must be so aromatic

#4.. OMG, this dried beef curry is indeed looking phenomenal!! no other words can describe..

#5.. sambal belacan somemore for the curry?? aiyoh, will that be too pedas or not?? i cannot take spicy food dei~~

#6.. gulai daging!! fuyoh, look at that "sparkling" layer of oil on top!! unhealthy but i bet must be super delicious..

#7.. okay, now this is something familiar to me, haha!! ayam masak merah, and i think this one is not as spicy as the others huh?? a little sweet and easier to swallow for one who cannot take spicy food..

#8.. save the best for last!!! I LOVE THIS!!! wah, your mom's indian curry veggie looks super duper yummy!!! this will be my pick of the day!!!

oooh, just the four of you to wallop all those food and clean every single drop of gravy on the plates?? indeed a feating frenzy, hehehe!! must be so satisfying and happy right?? :)
